For example, if the distance from the wall to the ballisters measures 38 inches, then you would need a 27-inch runner. If your stairs are more than 40 inches, we recommend several different width options, starting at 31 inches and wider. It is generally good to have 5 to 7 inches of wood showing on either side. The underlayment (pad) is a very important part of your carpet runner purchase. The underlayment absorbs foot traffic noise and helps maintain your carpet runner's original appearance. We recommend a 32-ounce synthetic underlayment for superior cushioning for your stair and hallway runners.
Rug underlayment is treated differently because of the loose-lay nature of a rug.
