Aside from the adding color, design, and warmth to your home, stair runners keep your staircases child-safe and elder-safe. Having a bare staircase increases the risk of danger and the likelihood of severe injuries due to falls. As an added benefit, carpeting your staircase will help soundproof foot traffic. We provide an array of quality runners to choose from, made from some of the most durable fibers on the market. Review our durability rating system to ensure that your runner will give you the best return on your investment.

*Our rating system for cost is intended to provide BASIC INSTALLED pricing information. Stair runner material is sold by the linear foot. Underlayment is always included in the price-per-linear-foot. The price-per-linear-foot includes installation-over-pad and tailored-to-the-stair nosing. Again, this price is just to give you a range of what the material and installation will cost per linear foot.
- $20 to $30 per linear foot
- $30 to $45 per linear foot
- $45 to $65 per linear foot
Custom applications, such as miters, angles, curves, or other treatments seen on our website, are priced per custom finish needed. This requires on-site measuring to determine the amount of material required for your project.
Amount of material required: All carpet runners will have a pattern design ranging from 4 inches up to 6 feet. The smaller geometric patterns are usually 4 to 6 inches, and the larger pattern designs will have a 2- to 6-foot repeat. The amount of material needed depends on how elaborate the installation job is. For example, including pattern-match T-landings, miters, angles, cloning, and endcaps will add to the amount of material needed. The general rule of thumb is to measure the amount of material needed plus the size of the pattern repeat. During your in-home appointment, your Specialist will assist you in estimating how much material you need for your project.
Durability depends on two factors: the type of fiber and the density construction. Our rating system gives you the information you need to determine which carpet runner will last the longest in your home. Our rating system is based on moderate foot traffic:
- Low end product: less expensive fiber with minimum density construction, less warranty. The texture of this type of carpet runner will typically look new for 1 to 3 years.
- Lower middle product: less expensive fiber with fair density construction, fair warranty. The texture of this type of carpet runner will typically look new for 3 to 4 years.
- Middle grade product: good fiber with good density construction, good warranty. The texture of this type of carpet runner will typically look new for 4 to 7 years.
- Very durable carpet runner product: high-end fiber (i.e. wool, Stainmaster nylon) with great density construction, great warranty. This texture of this type of runner will typically look new for 7 to 15 years.
- Highly durable carpet runners: products made with the finest and most luxurious fiber on the market (i.e. New Zealand Wool, Nylon Blend) with the very best density construction. The quality of this type of carpet runner surpasses the toughest standards in the industry. Only the very best can earn the 5-star rating. The texture of this type of carpet runner will typically look new for 15 years to the lifetime of the runner.
Yes. Carpet runners are made from different types of fiber, and each fiber cleans differently from the next.
- Low end product: cheap fiber, very difficult to clean
- Lower middle product: cheap fiber, difficult to clean
- Middle grade product: good fiber, somewhat easy to clean
- Very durable carpet runner product: easy to clean
- Highly durable carpet runner product: very easy to clean
Follow your regular routine of carpet runner maintenance. If your carpet runner still looks soiled, then it's time to call a professional carpet cleaning service. It is very important not to use a shampoo cleaning method to clean your runner. Shampoo tends to leave an oily residue behind that attracts more dirt than before, so your carpet runner will look worse than it did before the cleaning. CustomStairRunners.com recommends a Dry Foam Extraction System method, which is the best way to clean deeply soiled carpet runners.
Once you have had your stair runner installed, there are several things you can do to maintain and prolong the life of the carpet. Here are some simple tips:
1. Limit soil damage by always removing shoes prior to walking on your runner.
2. Vacuum your hardwood floors, carpets, and carpet runners frequently. This will prevent soil from other areas of your home from damaging your carpet runner.
Remember, prevention is the key! Most often what appears to be normal wear and tear from foot traffic is actually caused by abrasive dirt and soil damaging the delicate carpet fibers and coloring of your carpet runner. Regular maintenance will save you on costly professional cleaning, which is not always guaranteed.
Wool has been used in carpets for centuries. It is the benchmark to which all other fibers are compared. It is strong, comfortable, and luxurious. Nothing else gives quite the same look and feel as wool. A high-density wool runner makes an excellent stair runner that will last a lifetime.
Carpet runners made of synthetic fiber include Nylon and Polypropylene (aka Olefin). Both fibers have advantages over each other, but very few runners are made with Nylon fiber. If you have a heavy traffic staircase, a wool/nylon blend will have the durability needed to last.
Our rating system provides you with the knowledge you need to select the best runner for your home. In some cases, it comes down to making a selection simply because it's the perfect pattern style and color for your home.

Yes! Most stair and hallway runners have matching area rugs that range from basic rug sizes to irregular shaped rugs. If not, CustomStairRunners.com will custom-make a coordinating rug of any size to match your runner style and colors.
If a standard rug size is too big for your space, we can reduce your rug as long as it has a symmetrical design. Make sure to ask your Specialist about your options. With CustomStairRunners.com, anything is possible — and that's what makes us the best in the carpet runner business!
The cost to install or customize your carpet runner has to be determined by your Specialist at your in-home appointment. Only then we will be able to estimate your total job cost. Please refer to our customer photo gallery to see the virtually endless possibilities available to you!
The proper width of your runner is determined by the width of your wood stair treads. For example, if the distance from the wall to the ballisters measures 38 inches, then you would need a 27-inch runner. If your stairs are more than 40 inches, we recommend several different width options, starting at 31 inches and wider. It is generally good to have 5 to 7 inches of wood showing on either side. Our Specialist will help you determine the perfect width for your runner.
Your order will take approximately 3 to 4 weeks from start to finish. Once you make your runner selection online and make an appointment with a Specialist, we can move very quickly. All custom work will be quoted with a time frame.
The underlayment (pad) is a very important part of your carpet runner purchase. The underlayment absorbs foot traffic noise and helps maintain your carpet runner's original appearance. We recommend a 32-ounce synthetic underlayment for superior cushioning for your stair and hallway runners.
Rug underlayment is treated differently because of the loose-lay nature of a rug. For this option, a non-slip underlayment with a textured top surface and a layer of rubber attached to the bottom is recommended so that the pad won't slide or damage the finish on your wood floors. The pad will absorb much of the weight applied to the surface of your rug, thus preventing premature matting of your carpet runner.
Our quality of customization of an installation (including pattern-matching T-landings, miters, angles, cloning, and endcaps) is what separates us from our competition. Our expert Installers will always use the best materials available. We seam the pattern together with hot-melt seaming tape, then hand-sew the corners with the exact same thread to reinforce the connection. All carpet runner installations are installed with a combination of special adhesive or stapled with an electric carpet gun that drives the staples through the wood. If you have marble, stone, or tile stair threads, the runner installation involves 100% adhesive-based installation.
Yes! We have a great selection of decorative stair rods in many finishes, styles, and price ranges. You can see examples of these products on the Stair Rod Selection page.
Stair rods add a special aesthetic touch to your stair runner. Stair rods give your home the warmth and luxury it deserves. Please tell us if you are interested so our Specialists can bring rod styles and colors choices to your in-home appointment.
In most cases, staples are used to wrap the stair runner under the stair nose and between the bottom riser and back stair thread. Only certain lower-profile carpet runners require adhesive to hold the runner in place under the stair nose.
The runner is installed over a 32-ounce synthetic underlayment with a combination of small hidden staples and/or adhesive. This installation method keeps the carpet runner from shifting, which is not only safer but also better for the integrity of the carpet runner.
Once you have selected your runner (and depending on the manufacturer availability), most of our runners are received and installed within a few weeks of your order. The amount of time it takes to complete the actual installation itself depends on the complexity of the job. On average, the majority of our installations can range from a few hours for a standard staircase or up to six hours for stairs with landings. If you have a more intricate staircase, such as a spiral staircase, templates would be required prior to the final installation and actual installation time could vary. During your in-home appointment, we will confirm the expected time frame for your custom installation.
